TRADE
INTERNATIONAL
International agri-food trade contributes to sustainable development and food security, as it makes it possible to compensate for deficits and surpluses between countries; increase the quantity, variety and quality of food available; act as a price stabilizer and contribute to the consumption of healthy and safe foods through the use of health standards; as well as to generate income and jobs that contribute to the economic and social development of the region. Current challenges stem in part from the impact of global crises, changes in the geopolitics of food, and greater pressure due to the climate situation. Environmental concerns threaten the region's agricultural competitiveness due to increased production and marketing costs; to the emergence of environmental rules, regulations and actions with the potential to restrict trade in the region, as well as the possible redefinition and increase of production subsidies. For this reason, the following collective actions are proposed.
Collective actions
01
-
Consolidate the network of agricultural negotiators to promote regional positions before the WTO that favor open, transparent and predictable international trade.
-
Address in a coordinated manner the emergence of regulations that threaten to restrict agri-food trade in the countries of the region.
-
Increase intraregional trade through better use of current trade agreements and coordination with mechanisms and other institutions that promote integration in the region.
